My SACSA Story |
Jamel Mallory Jr. serves as the Assistant Director of Career Education at UNC Chapel Hill, working within the Career Center to support students in their career development through services such as resume and cover letter assistance, mock interviews, and more.
He attended his first SACSA conference in 2024, held in Charlotte, and found it to be an incredible experience. Jamel thoroughly appreciated the chance to connect with fellow professionals in higher education and student affairs. The conference fostered a collaborative and enriching learning environment, full of valuable insights and idea-sharing. He found it energizing to engage with individuals who are both passionate and knowledgeable in the field.
Jamel hoped the conference would provide opportunities for meaningful networking and exposure to innovative strategies to better support students on his campus—and it certainly delivered. Jamel got exactly what he hoped for from the conference. It reaffirmed that building connections can be just as impactful—if not more so—than the content itself. Many of the most valuable insights emerged through informal conversations and relationships, often surpassing what was gained from the sessions alone.
At the SACSA conference, Jamel gained valuable insights into both personal and professional growth. He learned that navigating imposter syndrome is an ongoing journey that requires self-awareness and intentional strategies. He was reminded of the vital role data and statistics play in higher education, serving as key tools for informed decision-making and demonstrating impact. The sessions also reinforced the importance of staying student-centered in his work, rather than being guided solely by personal passion. Additionally, Jamel recognized the importance of finding mentors who can offer guidance and support along his career path. He also came away with a deeper understanding that professional development isn't limited to conferences—there are countless opportunities for continuous learning and growth throughout the year.
After attending SACSA, Jamel described the experience as feeling like joining a family—a true community dedicated to both personal and professional development. It served as a powerful reminder that he's not alone in his journey, and that there's a supportive network of individuals who are deeply committed to student success, leadership, and mutual growth. The experience was both energizing and reassuring.
We extend our sincere appreciation to Jamel for his many contributions—not only to the conference but also to the broader field of student affairs. His dedication, passion, and hard work are truly invaluable and deeply appreciated.
