| My SACSA Story |
Dr. Eric Bailey II serves as the Senior Associate Vice Provost for Student Academic Success at the University of Memphis. He explained that his role at the University of Memphis is centered on ensuring that students stay on track and have the resources they need to graduate on time. His areas of responsibility include the First and Second Year Academic Advising Center; the Center for Academic Success and Achievement, which provides academic coaching, tutoring, and writing services; the Center for Athletic Academic Services, which supports student-athletes; Disability Resources for Students; the Office of Professional Testing; the Peer Power Institute, a nonprofit organization that employs students as success coaches and embeds them in high-drop, high-withdrawal, and gateway courses; and TRIO Student Support Services programs. He also oversees financial support initiatives, including completion grants and primarily need-based scholarships to help students persist and graduate.
His first SACSA experience, he shared that his initial, unofficial exposure was around 2012 at the University of Memphis, when he was new to the field and eager to learn more about the profession and the people in it. His first official conference experience was in 2014 in Louisville, KY.
One of his most memorable experiences was attending NPI in 2014, where he connected with other professionals who were similarly eager to learn, grow, and determine their long-term paths in the field.
For first-time SACSA conference attendees, he advised them not to be bashful or intimidated. Although it may feel overwhelming to be in a room with seasoned professionals, he emphasized that everyone was once a first-time attendee. He encouraged newcomers to introduce themselves, be direct about their goals—whether seeking mentorship, networking, or career advice—and confidently make requests. He noted that members are generally welcoming and willing to support emerging professionals.
He described the experience as consistently rejuvenating. Attending SACSA allows him to reconnect with colleagues and friends, reflect on the challenges and successes of the academic year, and gain fresh perspectives through presentations and conversations. The conference serves as a reset point, helping him return to campus reenergized and motivated for the remainder of the year.
What keeps him coming back is his commitment to contributing as much as he gains. He volunteers on committees, presents at conferences, and supports the organization financially through the foundation. Mentors once told him that if he could not present on work he was actively doing, he should reflect on his professional impact—advice he has taken seriously. He values sharing best practices from his institution and collaborating with colleagues from other institutions. Additionally, he appreciates reconnecting with mentees and continuing those relationships. Altogether, his involvement, service, and dedication to professional growth are what bring him back each year.
Dr. Bailey, Eric Bailey, or Dr. B, we thank you for your continued service, hard work, and dedication to the field and to the organization.
