More Than a Conference: My First Time at SACSA

Taryn Neal shares how her first SACSA transformed networking into friendships, sparked professional growth, and inspired her to keep coming back.

For many professionals in student affairs, the Southern Association for College Student Affairs (SACSA) is more than just a conference — it’s a community. For Taryn Neal, Coordinator of Leadership and Volunteerism in Student Activities at Western Kentucky University, her first SACSA experience was transformative both personally and professionally.

Why SACSA?

Neal first decided to attend SACSA after positive experiences at other conferences, but to her, SACSA felt different from the start. Neal explained, “I was excited to network, to meet new people in the field, and to learn how to better serve students.” Her first SACSA conference, held in Atlanta, left a lasting impression. Neal recalls arriving alone after colleagues were unable to attend at the last minute. “Even though I came by myself, the environment was so warm and welcoming. From the very first reception, it was clear SACSA knows how to strike that balance — giving us the professional development we need while also creating space for fun and connection.”

One of the most memorable aspects of Neal’s first SACSA experience was the relationships she formed. “I ended up getting close to colleagues from my own university who I had never really talked to before,” she said with a laugh. “It took SACSA, in a different city, for us to actually connect. One of those colleagues is now one of my closest friends. SACSA brought me friendships and opportunities I never expected.”

Lessons Learned & Words of Wisdom:

Neal also highlights the professional development she gained. One session on collaboration in student affairs left a significant mark. “It reminded me to be intentional about relationships with colleagues across campus — remembering names, building real connections, not just reaching out when I need something. That intentionality has stayed with me.” What surprised her the most: the community, Neal admits, was the biggest surprise. “I had always heard how important networking is, but SACSA really showed me what that looks like in practice. People are so welcoming and genuine — it makes stepping out of your comfort zone a lot easier.”

If she could change anything about her first experience, Neal says she wishes she had gotten more involved right away. “There are so many volunteer opportunities, and I wish I had taken advantage of those sooner. But I’m excited to dive into them this year.” Her advice for first-time attendees is simple: “Put yourself out there. Get uncomfortable. You learn the most when you step outside your comfort zone. Go to sessions, receptions, and talk to people. Everyone at SACSA wants to see you succeed, and you’ll leave with knowledge, connections, and memories you didn’t expect.”

Returning to SACSA

Neal is excited to return to SACSA this year — this time as both an attendee and a presenter. She will co-present with Dr. Monica Burke on “Mentee to Mentor: Building a Culture of Reciprocal Leadership.” She looks forward to sharing her knowledge, continuing to grow as a young professional, and learning from seasoned colleagues across the region.

“Networking, volunteering, and growing in the profession — that’s what SACSA is all about,” Neal said. “And that’s why I keep coming back.”
