Celebrating 75 Years of SACSA

Celebrating 75 years in 2025, SACSA connects student affairs professionals through dynamic conferences and committees, fostering leadership, growth, and innovation across the Southeastern U.S.

Celebrating 75 Years of SACSA: A Milestone in Student Affairs Excellence

For more than 75 years, the Southern Association for College Student Affairs (SACSA) has stood as a cornerstone of the student affairs profession across the southeastern region of the United States. Since its founding in 1949, SACSA has grown from a small, passionate network of educators into a vibrant, multi-generational community dedicated to the holistic development of college students and the advancement of student affairs professionals.

SACSA was established during a pivotal era in American higher education — a time when college enrollment was booming and campuses were beginning to recognize the importance of student life beyond the classroom. SACSA emerged to support professionals working in housing, counseling, student activities, and more, providing a regional space to share knowledge, develop best practices, and build lasting networks. What began as a series of informal gatherings has evolved into a respected organization with hundreds of members, a signature annual conference, and a strong commitment to professional growth, research, and professionalism.

Over the decades, SACSA has been a witness to and a leader through profound changes in the student affairs field. SACSA has consistently provided space for courageous conversation, community, and collaboration.

Key highlights in SACSA’s history include:

  • Establishing the College Student Affairs Journal, creating a platform for members to publish and exchange cutting-edge research, promising practices, and scholarly insights in student affairs.
  • Broadening professional development offerings to serve every career stage — from graduate students and emerging professionals to seasoned leaders.
  • Navigating and leading through challenging times, including natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and public health crises like COVID-19, fostering a spirit of collaboration, resource sharing, and resilience among members.
  • Expanding regional and national partnerships to amplify member voices and strengthen professional networks across the field.
  • Celebrating and recognizing member achievements, from leadership awards to service milestones, reinforces SACSA’s culture of appreciation and community.
  • Launching mentorship and leadership pipelines, ensuring the next generation of student affairs professionals has the support and guidance needed to thrive.

Looking Ahead: The Future of SACSA

As we honor more than seven decades of service, SACSA continues to evolve to meet the needs of today’s higher education professionals. In a time marked by budget constraints, changing student demographics, and a reimagining of campus life, SACSA remains a space for advocacy, mentorship, and innovation.

With new technologies, remote work possibilities, and an increasing call for leadership excellence, SACSA is positioned to lead the conversation about the future of student affairs in the South — and beyond.

Join the Celebration

Last year, our Association began celebrating 75 years of SACSA in Charlotte, NC. We are eager and excited to continue this positive momentum as we celebrate our 75th conference in Louisville, KY. Throughout the remainder of this year, SACSA will commemorate its legacy with special events, member spotlights, and historical retrospectives.

Together, we celebrate a past rich with impact and a future full of promise.
