Reflecting on the 2025 New Professionals Institute (NPI)

The 2025 New Professionals Institute brought together early-career student affairs professionals for a transformative week of growth, leadership, and connection.

The 2025 New Professionals Institute (NPI), hosted by the Southern Association for College Student Affairs (SACSA) in partnership with NASPA Region III, brought together a vibrant cohort of early-career student affairs professionals for a week of deep reflection, dynamic learning, and genuine connection. Known for its emphasis on both personal and professional development, this year’s NPI once again proved to be a cornerstone experience for those entering the field of higher education.

Held at the University of South Carolina, NPI welcomed participants into an intentional space designed to cultivate self-awareness, leadership capacity, and resilience. Through a series of engaging presentations, small group dialogues, and one-on-one mentorship moments, attendees were given the tools and support to navigate the often complex landscape of student affairs.

One of the sessions came from Dr. Mike Wilkinson, whose presentation resonated deeply with many in attendance. Dailyn Tichenor, a participant in this year’s cohort, shared, “It was a presentation I will remember, cherish, and listen to when my cup is full.” Like so many moments throughout the week, Wilkinson’s talk offered more than just professional insight—it provided affirmation and personal clarity.

Faculty members, many of whom are seasoned leaders in the field, played a crucial role in guiding participants through the experience. Dr. Brandon Brown reflected on his time engaging with attendees, stating, “While we may face challenges at different times and in different ways, we all share the same deep commitment to showing up and serving students.” These conversations—often marked by vulnerability and honesty—helped participants feel seen, supported, and inspired to continue growing in their roles.

For Dr. Justin Jeffery, serving as faculty was equally impactful. “It was grounding, energizing, and reaffirming,” he shared, emphasizing how important it is for established professionals to reconnect with their purpose through engagement with the next generation.

Perhaps one of the most powerful full-circle moments came from Dr. Eric Bailey II, a former NPI faculty member who will step into the role of NPI Director for 2026–2027. “It is a full-circle moment and somewhat surreal that I step into the Director role,” Bailey said. “I look forward to working with NASPA Region III, SACSA, and the leaders at the University of Texas–Arlington to produce an enriching experience for future leaders.” His journey from participant to future director represents the enduring impact of NPI and the legacy it builds across the profession.

As the week came to a close, the reflections shared by participants highlighted the transformative nature of the institute. Barbara Henrich remarked, “We reflected on our week at NPI, what we learned, and how we would apply those lessons at our respective institutions and over the course of our careers.” The bonds formed and the insights gained throughout the week left a lasting imprint, reinforcing that NPI is far more than a conference—it is a catalyst for growth.

For new professionals considering whether to attend in the future, the advice from this year’s cohort is both enthusiastic and unanimous: go. “Don’t second-guess it, don’t hold it off—GO!” said Tichenor.

As SACSA and NASPA Region III look ahead to future cohorts, the 2025 NPI stands as a testament to the power of community, intentionality, and reflection. It continues to shape the field of student affairs one leader at a time—grounded in purpose, connection, and a shared commitment to student success.
