Melissa Barrett's Story

From supporting student leaders to creating memorable campus traditions, Melissa embodies the spirit of SACSA through leadership, service, and community!

Melissa Barrett serves as the Associate Director for Student Organizations and Programming within the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership at the College of Charleston. In this role, she oversees many of the institution's student organizations, ensuring compliance with university policies and procedures, providing guidance on organizational requirements, developing trainings, and connecting student leaders with campus resources that support their success. In addition to organizational oversight, Melissa plans and coordinates several campus traditions and signature events, including Moonlight Breakfast (a late-night breakfast held each semester), and Cougar Night Lights (a holiday-themed kickoff event featuring a light show). She also collaborates with campus partners on a variety of programs and initiatives throughout the year. Melissa oversees the Student Media Board and its five branches, which include two publications, video, and radio media. Responsibilities include supervising the general manager, supporting student media operations, and ensuring adherence to First Amendment principles, copyright regulations, and university policies. Beyond these duties, she serves on committees that support large-scale campus initiatives such as Homecoming and Family Weekend, helping coordinate vendors, partnerships, and campus-wide collaboration.

Melissa first attended and presented at the Southern Association for College Student Affairs (SACSA) Conference in 2023. While completing a master's degree at the University of Georgia, she participated in a Law and Higher Education course that focused on accessibility and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in higher education. Drawing from that experience, Melissa and colleagues presented on ADA compliance, accessibility needs, and accommodations in higher education. Attending SACSA for the first time, offered an opportunity to present professionally, reconnect with professors and colleagues, and learn more about the organization. One of the most memorable aspects of that experience was being able to present and attend a professional conference simultaneously while engaging in a familiar environment that made entering a new professional community feel welcoming and accessible.

For first-time attendees, Melissa encourages active participation. She advices to ask questions, attend sessions that align with both current and future career goals, engage in conversations, and build meaningful professional connections. These relationships can become valuable resources for benchmarking, collaboration, mentorship, and future career opportunities.

Melissa describes the SACSA experience as feeling much like a family reunion. While there are always new professionals to meet, there are also familiar faces who reconnect year after year. The conference provides opportunities to learn from experienced higher education professionals, gain insight into leadership pathways, and build relationships with mentors and peers across the field.

What continues to bring Melissa back to SACSA is the sense of community, inclusion, and professional growth. She values the opportunity to connect with professionals from diverse backgrounds and institutions, particularly fellow professionals of color who bring unique perspectives and experiences. SACSA fosters an environment where both new and returning members are welcome, supported, and encouraged to grow. For Melissa, the organization is a professional family committed to helping its members succeed, learn, and remain connected throughout their careers.

We thank Melissa for her exceptional leadership, unwavering support, and dedicated service to both the organization and the student affairs profession. Her commitment, expertise, and contributions have made a lasting impact, and we are grateful for the positive influence she continues to have on colleagues, students, and the broader field.
