Shaping the Future of Student Affairs: Reflections from the 2026 Future of Student Affairs Summit

Thirty student affairs professionals from NASPA Region III gathered at James Madison University to discuss the future of higher education, exploring innovation, collaboration, and evolving practices.

The fourth annual Future of Student Affairs Summit (FOSAS) convened June 1–5, 2026, at James Madison University, bringing together 30 student affairs professionals from across NASPA Region III. Designed as an intensive collaborative institute, FOSAS challenges emerging and experienced professionals to apply design thinking principles to complex issues shaping the future of higher education and student affairs.

This year's summit centered on three timely areas of inquiry: the intersection of technology and student mental health, designing an essential student experience within an uncertain financial landscape, and cultivating a culture of employee care. Working in collaborative teams, participants developed innovative, evidence-informed recommendations that address the evolving needs of students, institutions, and the profession.

Beyond the formal project work, participants emphasized the importance of the relationships and professional growth fostered during the summit.

"I'm leaving this experience with new connections and a fresh sense of curiosity about the future of student affairs."
— Monique Rochon

Similarly, Jessica Haravay reflected on the lasting impact of the experience.

"This was an incredibly rewarding experience that I'm so glad I was a part of! I'm walking away with new skills, new friends, and a greater appreciation for the student affairs field."
— Jessica Haravay

These reflections underscore FOSAS's role not only as a space for innovation but also as a catalyst for professional learning, collaboration, and community building.

Interest in FOSAS continues to grow, demonstrating the profession's commitment to innovation and collaborative leadership. The 2026 summit attracted 99 applicants competing for just 30 available participant positions, reflecting strong demand for opportunities that encourage creative problem-solving and forward-thinking practice.

Looking Ahead

Momentum will continue next summer as another cohort of professionals convenes at Mississippi State University for the next iteration of the Future of Student Affairs Summit. As higher education continues to navigate rapid change, initiatives like FOSAS provide an important forum for developing innovative solutions and preparing student affairs professionals to lead the profession forward.
