Recap: The Future of Student Affairs Summit – A Transformative Experience for Higher Ed Leaders

An inspiring, high-impact retreat for student affairs professionals to connect, reflect, and reimagine the future of higher education leadership.

HARRISONBURG, VIRGINIA – Hosted at James Madison University, the Future of Student Affairs Summit convened a select cohort of higher education professionals for an intensive, reflective experience designed to foster leadership, innovation, and adaptive problem-solving. Set against the backdrop of the scenic Shenandoah Valley, the Summit provided a thoughtfully curated environment that encouraged participants to engage in critical dialogue, explore emerging challenges in student affairs, and build meaningful professional relationships across institutional types and career levels.

Participants were invited to step outside routine operational demands and engage in a space that prioritized strategic thinking, vulnerability, and collaborative learning. The experience was designed not just as a retreat, but as a generative environment for rethinking practice and re-centering purpose in the field.

Dr. Mya Richardson-Echols of Clayton State University described the experience as:

“Creating space to reflect, connect, and think differently about problem-solving. This may be my favorite professional development experience to date… This work demands the art of the pivot, and spaces like this help us stay ready.”

The Summit emphasized the central role of human connection in professional growth and leadership development. As Elle Smith of Appalachian State University reflected:

“What made this experience truly special were the people. Every conversation was filled with insight, encouragement, and authenticity… I walk away from this experience inspired and more committed than ever to the work we do.”

With a strong emphasis on cross-role dialogue, equity-informed leadership, and the cultivation of adaptive skills, the Future of Student Affairs Summit stands out as a vital opportunity for reflection, reinvigoration, and scholarly exchange. It functions not only as a think tank, but also as a supportive community of practice for professionals committed to shaping the future of student affairs.

Applications for next year’s Summit are anticipated to open in February. All student affairs professionals—whether emerging leaders or seasoned practitioners—are encouraged to seek this opportunity to deepen their practice, expand their leadership capacity, and join a growing network of changemakers in the field.
